EA sends out 3-D models of all creatures made in the E3 booth

Written on July 27, 2006 by Kyle

In a move that shows video game companies still have souls, EA recently started delivering 3-D models of creatures that a few lucky people were able to make at E3 2006. A little after E3, we linked to a Joystiq article showing off some of these cool 3-D models on showcase at E3.

3-D Printout of a SPORE figurine

It looks like starting a couple days ago, EA started delivering these personalized creatures to everyone who got to play around with the creature editor. Signs of deliveries are popping up all over as well, so it’s pretty safe to assume that EA is trying to send these out to everyone who had the luxury of using the creature editor at E3.

Here’s an excerpt from the letter they sent to one lucky individual:

Dear CK,

Thanks for visiting SPORE’s VIP room at E3. You were one of the first people in the galaxy to play with SPORE’s creature editor, and we’ve created a 3D version of your creation to show our appreciation! Remember this little guy?

Your creature is totally unique, personal creation offering up a small taste of the incalculable customization, personalization and creativity at the heart of SPORE … Imagine a massive, living universe with more than two million planets populated entirely by creatures, buildings and vehicles that you and other SPORE players create. The game even tailors your galactic neighbors based on your own tastes and style of play.

You and your new creature have the whole of the cosmos ahead of you. What will you do with your own personal universe creation kit?

You can see pictures of his creature over at his Flickr account.

Signs of things to come?

Ever since E3, people have been speculating about whether EA is going to offer a 3-D printing service for your creatures. There was even an article in Discover magazine about this subject that brought up a discussion in the forums. It seems like this is a great sign that this service in fact exists — and they’re even testing it out!

I don’t know about all of you — but I am super excited about this news. I would love to have 3-D printout of my own creatures. Hopefully EA will be officially announcing this information in the coming months.

That’s quite a nice touch from EA, sending these 3-D models out. Hopefully I can get my hands on an Intel Mac by the time Spore debuts.

If I could get a 3-D printout of my own creatures I’d definately buy at least one, though it’d be hard to decide which one… When I get this game/editor, I’m gonna make tons of creatures.
